Driving in and around Central Sofia can be a challenge and is not recommended for visitors. Sofia's roads are hectic and congested and the city has an excellent Metro and a reasonable ground transport.
If you're looking to travel beyond Sofia once you're here, hiring a car may be a good option. Still, we recommend renting the car only after you are ready to leave for the countryside.

Parking in Sofia is also something you need to be aware of when hiring a car.
CAR RENTAL COMPANIES
There is no shortage of car rental agencies in Sofia.
Most of the big-name car hire companies have offices at Sofia Airport, the international chain hotels and downtown Sofia. Bookings are best made online.
If the prices of the bigger agencies seem too high, try some of the local ones, which are a little cheaper and more flexible.
In any case, the competition is fierce, so make sure to shop around and ask for a discount.
