How Much Time to Spend in Sofia

Last updated May 2017

Sofia’s quiet charm is not always visible at first sight. Allow some time to soak up the atmosphere, meet some local people and explore the back streets, art galleries and coffee shops.

Bulgaria's capital Sofia is a city of 1.3 million that is compact and pedestrian friendly. Base yourself in the city center and walk to almost all tourist attractions, museums and places of interest.

You can easily see all there is in 3 to 4 days.

In town for just a couple of hours? Have a quick walking tour and a glimpse at the major tourist sites in Sofia.

Check out our 2 hour Sofa itinerary.

For a more detailed and relaxed experience, spend at least a day in Sofia.
This will allow you to stop at several of Sofia's numerous coffee shops, have a long lunch and eat dinner at one of Sofia’s many restaurants.

Check out our Sofa in one day itinerary.

If you want to include museum visits /allow approximately 1 to 2 hours per museum/, enjoy the city's relaxed atmosphere and fully appreciate Sofia’s vibrant coffee and restaurant scene, plan to spend 2-3 days in town.

To sample Sofia’s nightlife scene be here on a Friday or Saturday night.

You may be able to visit some museums for free if you are in Sofia in the last week of each month. This is when most museums have their monthly free entrance day.
