Flying to Sofia

Last updated Nov 2014

The only airport in Sofia, Sofia International Airport welcomes no more than 50 flights on a typical day. While this makes border control and customs clearance feel like a breeze, it also makes it a little harder to find convenient and cheap flights to Sofia, Bulgaria.

The universal rules of air travel apply; whether using budget airlines, booking in advance, keeping an eye on deals and allowing some flexibility with the dates.

Peak periods include Christmas to early January and the summer months.

There are direct daily flights from most (though not all) European capitals and major European airports, as well as several destinations in the Middle East.

There are no direct flights from North America and most of Asia.

European and North American connecting flights go via one of Europe’s bigger airports, London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Munich, while travelers from Asia typically transfer in Doha on Quatar Airways or Istanbul on Turkish Airlines .

When booking your ticket to Sofia make sure that you have more than enough time to transfer. Most airlines fly to Sofia only once a day, some not even every day. A missed flight to Sofia often means a night at the airport.

Bulgaria Air is Bulgaria’s national carrier and the only Bulgarian airline. It operates a small fleet of aged aircrafts, but onboard services are reasonable for prices that rival low-cost airlines.

The airline is flexible with luggage and, unlike low-cost carriers, lands at major airports at all destinations.
