Before Booking a Hotel

Five-star hotels

Most of the Five-star hotels are chain-affiliated, with a few notable exceptions like the Grand Hotel Sofia and Arena Di Serdica.

Business hotels tend to be of a good quality and staff is well trained and courteous.

Most hotels offer special discounts in August and around Christmas , as well as on the weekends.

Four-star Hotels

The Four-star and Three-star hotel experiences can be hit or miss.

Hotels vary from the big Communist-era large hotel complexes, now run-down beyond recognition,  to the small private hotels recently built in strange shapes and forms.

Several very good Four-star hotels are also present. So check the online reviews before booking.

Rates

Rates are usually quoted in Bulgarian Leva, with all taxes included.

Some luxury hotels, however, quote in euro and net of taxes so always ask if taxes are included in quotes.

Breakfast

Most rates will include breakfast, which can range from a lavish buffet in the Five-stars to unappetizing slices of cheese and tomatoes on a platter in the more modest hotels.

Some hotels offer a rate without breakfast, which is usually a better deal if you are not a breakfast eater. The nearest coffee shop is no more than a block away and will, in many cases, offer a better breakfast experience.
