Traffic in Sofia is not heavy, but it is hectic and disorganized. There are cases of intolerant and even aggressive drivers, so it is best to practice defensive driving.
Traffic signs are confusing, often in Cyrillic and sometimes even missing, so a GPS navigation is a must.
ARRIVING FROM THE EAST (via Plovdiv)
Follow the highway which transforms into Tsarigradsko shose and then Ruski Boulevard splitting the very heart of the city in two.
Be careful to notice when the highway formally ends as the speed limit drops to 80kmp/h and then 50kmp/h. This is a prime hunting spot for traffic police.
ARRIVING FROM SERBIA
Drive straight on Slivnitsa Boulevard, until you reach Lions Bridge and turn right onto Maria Louisa Boulevard.
You will be in the center of Old Sofia with the mosque on the left and St Nedelya Church straight ahead.
ARRIVING FROM VARNA (via Veliko Tarnovo):
After exiting the highway and passing through the two neighborhoods of Gorni Bogrov and Dolni Bogrov, drive onto the large Botevgradsko shose Boulevard that leads to the city center.
ARRIVING FROM GREECE (via Blagoevgrad)
Exit the highway and follow the blue signs for Boyana. Drive on Okolovrustno shousse (ring road) until you reach the exit for Bulgaria Boulevard that will lead to the National Palace of Culture. (this exit is not clearly marked, so have map or a GPS ready.)
