New bookstores have opened up on every corner in Sofia in recent years.
Most big ones have foreign language sections with books in English, Russian and, in some cases, German and French. Maps and travel books as well as books on Bulgarian art and history are sold.
Elephant is an all-English bookstore in the center of Sofia.
Address: 31 Tsar Shishman Str.
Nissim is a little bookstore for new and second-hand books. It looks like every small bookstore should look, with books covering every inch of the walls and, increasingly, the floor! Like all good bookstores, buying a book is often preceded by a book-related conversation.
Address: 59, Vassil Levski Blvd.
Greenwich is a big bookstore with a large section for foreign language books, located on Sofia’s pedestrianized Vitosha Boulevard. This is also a great place to buy maps and tourist guides.
Address: 37 Vitosha blvd.
Slaveykov Square is a large, open-air market open seven days a week.
